African Drumming

African drumming is a vibrant and essential aspect of the continent’s rich cultural heritage. The history of this musical tradition dates back thousands of years, with roots deeply embedded in the social, spiritual, and communal practices of various ethnic groups. Drumming served not only as a form of entertainment, but also as a vital means of communication, storytelling, and ritualistic expression. Today, the legacy of African drumming continues to inspire musicians worldwide, bridging cultural divides and celebrating the beauty of communal expression through rhythm.

AFTERNOON ACTIVITIES

Yoga.jpg

Yoga

We will be doing a stretch and strength class accompanied with music. We will start off grounding, firing up as we move along, and ending grounded as well. This class moves with an arc and the music will match it (as we build, so will the beat). With stretch and strength, we focus less on fast movement and chaturangas, and more on tension and release. I will offer options depending on the experience you'd like (grounding vs bringing intensity), you have the freedom to mix and match the experience, take everything that I offer, or go vouge as long as it's safe to do so. This class will have little to no chaturangas but you will still sweat. Throughout the class there will be words of encouragement to help challenge you in ways you have capacity to be challenged

Nature walk.jpg

Mindful Plant Walk

Therapeutic Horticulture - Our session will include an introduction to therapeutic horticulture (TH) as an evidence-based practice. We will also practice  mindfulness in nature featuring a walk through the trees with a focus on sensory stimulation. A nature-based meditation under the hemlocks and an introduction to forest bathing will also be part of the experience. To honour conservation, we will do a planting of native plants. A selection of herbal teas will complement our sensory experience.

About Horticultural Therapy/Therapeutic Horticulture

We, as humans, are subconsciously drawn to nature in a phenomenon called biophilia. Surrounding our senses with nature and interacting with plants helps us destress, recharge, & reengage.

Horticultural therapy (HT) and, the less clinical, therapeutic horticulture (TH), are evidence-based practices that support mental and physical health by activating our natural biological & psychological responses to plants. HT/TH is guided by the Canadian Horticultural Therapy Association (CHTA.ca) & combines the best practices from mindfulness, cognitive behavioural therapy, and nature therapies.
